Born in Alexandra, Johannesburg, South-Africa in 1956 where he lives and works, Kay studied fine art at the ELC Art Centre at Rorke’s Drift in KwaZula Natal. Recepient of the first Daimler Chrysler Award for South African Contemporary Art in 2000. Hassan’s work is bold, and crosses easily and with authority, from small scale works to photographs, to video to installations, incorporating found objects into massive paper “constructions” (the artist’s chosen word). Hassan rips and cuts printed billboard posters, deconstructing and reconstructing them into new images.

Recent exhibitions include a retrospective of his work at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 2008, the Walker Art Center, USA in 2005, and at the Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland in 2003.
