PRESS RELEASE WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH AFRICAN ART? On Wednesday, 10 September, NOMAD welcomes three African artists for their first exhibition in Brussels. Bill Kouélany, (Congo) explores the absurd story of a war without a beginning and without an end, a war where official figures for collateral damages have been so underestimated that it is impossible to account for the human loss. In her paintings and installations, she explores the ruins of an exhausted country where the impact of bullets and houses smashed by shells have turned the capital, Brazzaville, into a sinister theatre. However, although she does not see herself as an activist, Kouélany has decided not to leave the city in order to document the unspeakable atrocities she has witnessed. In 2007 at Dokumenta XII, she built a wall made of papier-mâché and fabric sewn together symbolising the political and personal turmoil, and tragedies of many African countries, including Congo. Kouélany was awarded the Prix de la Francophonie and a fellowship to the Lucas Artists Program at Montalvo, California in 2006 at the 2006 Dakar Biennale. Kouélany lives and works in Brazzaville as a writer, stage designer and artist. According to the artist Louzla Darabi, (Algeria) three major themes live in her painting: the face, body and eroticism (as well as horror, death, the instant before death, the scene, the dream and desire). These themes are omnipresent in her most recent works. Louzla received her degree at Beaux Arts in Paris where she also works. For the past few years, Malam, (Cameroon) has received much attention, particularly for his sculptures and shocking installations. Part of the Squat’art group in Douala, he first showed installations in 2001 which immediately disturbed. When questioned why he depicted such horror in his work, the young sculptor responded simply, “If you measure it in terms of proportions, the balance between the topics of televised journalism, or even audio, we speak more of war than anything else. It is as if we are feeding man with this sorrow.” He aims to provoke by reminding the viewer what we have created, oftentimes making statements that focus directly on specific social conditions: suffering, inequality in the world and the continued existence of slavery. He often uses recuperation in his installations, such as pharmaceutical packaging and trash to name a few, focusing on his own conception of the "reality of life.”
Bill Kouélany (Congo-Brazzaville) déchire ses toiles et recoud les lambeaux, torturant les anatomies. C’est ainsi qu’elle donne libre cours à sa force expressive intérieure. Elle ne cherche pas à transmettre un message mais à faire prendre conscience de la nécessité qu’ont les hommes de reconstruire le tissu social détruit par le manque de communication. Présente à la dernière Dokumenta XII en 2007. Elle a reçu le Prix de la Francophonie à Dak’Art 2006 ce qui lui a permis de travailler en résidence en Californie. Trois thèmes majeurs habitent la peinture de Louzla Darabi (Algérie, vit et travaille à Paris) : le monstre, la mort, l’instant avant la mort – le visage, le corps, l’érotisme – le lieu, le rêve, le désir. Ces thèmes sont nettement développés dans les triptyques qu’elle commence en 2006. Mais ils sont déjà présents dans une série de peintures “Scène d’amour” (2003) et les autoportraits. Elle attache une grande importance à la matière de la peinture (huile). La peinture en tant qu’exercice de la pensée et du corps à travers une recherche quasi obsessionnelle de la couleur. Diplômée des Beaux-arts de Paris. L’univers du plasticien Malam (Cameroun) a déjà fait couler beaucoup d’encre. Faites de représentations humaines réalistes, ses installations en ont perturbé plus d’un. Après Dak’Art 2004 l’artiste continue à mettre en scène la violence et la manipulation par des moulages en plâtre calcinés, des tas de débris, mais aussi de matériaux de récupération, comme les boîtes de produits pharmaceutiques.

Ze verscheurt en herschikt haar netwerk op een haast anatomische wijze. Deze transparante densiteit is autobiografisch en refereert naar geweld en chaos uit de burgeroorlog begin jaren ‘90 in Brazzaville, maar is tevens een metafoor naar menig ander Afrikaans land. Aanwezig en opgemerkt op Dokumenta XII (2007). Bill woont en werkt in Congo-Brazzaville Louzla Darabi (Algerije) gaat inspiratie voor tekeningen en schilderijen voornamelijk uitdiepen in drie grote thema’s : het monsterachtige, de dood, het moment net voor de dood – het gelaat, lichaam, erotiek – de plaats, droom, verlangen. Deze thema’s zijn aanwezig en ontwikkeld in triptieken die ze vanaf 2006 schildert en reeds terug te vinden in de serie “Scène d’amour” (2003) alsook in zelfportretten. Louzla hecht veel belang aan het schilderen met (olie)verf. Het schilderen als oefening en expressie van de gedachte en van het lichaam door middel van een haast obsessionele zoektocht in het kleurenpalet. Afgestudeerd Beaux-Arts (Parijs). De kunstenares werkt en woont in Parijs Malam (Kameroen) is zijn expressieve installaties sinds Dak’Art2004 blijven voortbouwen op thema’s als barbarij en autodestructie. "Quand tu mesures en terme de proportions l'équilibre entre les sujets des différents journaux télévisés ou audio, on parle plus de guerre que d'autre chose. Comme si on nourrissait l'homme de ce mal". Andere sculpturen zijn samengestelde iconen bestaande uit verpakkingen van geneesmiddelen allerhande, een aanklacht tegen de dominante rol van de farmaceutische industrie in Afrika.
